I’m looking to hire some new folks for the spring/summer season and wonder if you know anyone who might be interested in joining our sales staff and or kitchen team.  Bilingual candidates are ideal.

I’m also looking for a mariachi band to play occasionally, I went before the city council last night and got approval to have live music so we’ll be offering that on our patio once summer rolls around.

Mainers March for Immigration ReformIn Arizona, a new law requires police to investigate and detain anyone that they have a “reasonable suspicion” of being an undocumented immigrant.

Civil rights experts across the country have loudly denounced the law, arguing that it will lead to racial profiling and will force anyone who looks like an immigrant (in Arizona, particularly people of Latino heritage) to carry papers proving their citizenship or face detainment and fines.

This Saturday, Mainers are marching in Portland to protest this law and demand real immigration reform. Click here for the Facebook event.

In America, people of color shouldn’t have to carry papers proving their citizenship. It’s just plain wrong and puts our nation in unseemly company with some of history’s worst violators of human rights.

It’s time to stand up for the Constitution and against racial profiling and demand federal action. We need comprehensive federal immigration reform to protect families from being torn apart and provide immigrants with a path to citizenship.

Maine has a long and unique history of immigration, from the French and Irish to East Africans and Latinos. On Saturday, let’s stand together as one state and fight back against discrimination and hate.

Where: Groups will meet at both Union Station and Kennedy Park in Portland. The groups will march across the city and meet at Congress Square Park for a rally and concert.

When: This Saturday May 1st. Marches start at 2:30. Rally will likely begin at 3:30.

A message from presente.org on Arizona’s new law.

Dear Blanca,

Last week, Arizona passed a new law that makes racial profiling legal and, in effect, requires police to stop people based on their race and ethnicity.

Arizona’s new law, SB 1070, says that police must question anyone they have “reasonable suspicion” of being an undocumented immigrant.1 Translation: police can now stop and harass people for no other reason than that they are brown-skinned or speak Spanish.

Black folks know all too well what it’s like when police treat an entire community of people as potential criminals because of what they look like. It’s demeaning, and it actually makes communities less safe by sowing distrust between police and community members.2,3,4

While ColorOfChange members have a variety of views about immigration, we hope we can all agree that racial profiling is wrong — period.

Please join us and Presente.org in condemning racial profiling, no matter whom it targets. We’ll present your signatures to Gov. Brewer of Arizona, as well as to President Obama and Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano. It takes just a moment:

Maine Immigration Reform Activists Call for NAFTA Review

For years, immigration activists have called for federal legislation that will allow undocumented workers to become citizens, that will end raids and deportation. But at a gathering in Portland Monday night, activists said any reform efforts must also address trade pacts, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement. They say it keeps poor countries poor and gives Latino workers little choice but to cross the border, often illegally.
