Vigil for Selvin at 2pm today: Stop the Deportation

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 2:00pm
End Time:
Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 7:00am
Location:
the Cumberland County Jail

Description

On Wednesday, May 26th members of the community will be holding an overnight vigil near the Cumberland County Jail in Portland. We will meet at 2pm and remain on site until the following morning to show support for Selvin’s release and to stop his deportation.

Selvin Arevalo came to the United States from Guatemala when he was 14 years old. Just before he was set to earn his high school diploma in Portland, Maine, he was detained after getting into a minor car accident and fled due to panic over his immigration status.

Selvin has been an exemplary member of his community, hard working, a committed student, and a faithful member of his church. His community has risen up around him to try and get him released from detention and to stop his deportation.

Selvin has made the U.S. his home. His hard work, commitment to education, and his desire to seek a better life for himself and those around him exemplifies the American DREAM.

A health fair to focus on health screenings and referrals

What: In May, Portland will hold its fifth annual Multicultural Exercise for Health and Love: a health fair that focuses on health screenings and referrals for racial and ethnic minority communities in the Greater Portland area. The event will celebrate the health and well being of Portland’s vibrant ethnic communities with multicultural food, dance and festivities. All attendees will be encouraged to take advantage of the culturally sensitive diabetes and heart health screenings, risk assessments and counseling. Admission is free.

The event is being organized by the Minority Health Program of Portland’s Public Health Division in partnership with Mercy Hospital in southern Maine in response to the health needs of the racial/ethnic communities in the Greater Portland area. Screenings will be conducted by the Maine Heart Center, and interpreters for more than twelve different languages will be available. There will be 750-900 community members attending and notable local area health providers providing assessment services, answering questions and distributing health information on specific health issues facing these communities. A post-event referral and improved access to primary care service providers are part of the package. All Portland area multicultural communities are encouraged to come, enjoy, dance, learn and screen yourself – you won’t be disappointed.
